Bitter grapefruit and spicy pine take over with sweeter fruity tones. Towards the end piny-fruity bitterness and sweet citrus get on top. Aftertaste has bittersweet grapefruit-orange juice and sour spicy dryness.

Fruity and piny New England -style India Pale Ale. Very nice bittersweet citrus bomb. But. The freshness factor could be clearer. Not excellent nor mind-blowing but still very tasty.

This beer was part of Alko's Finnish artisanal beer selection in spring 2018.

(I don't usually write intros to Ölbeats but this and one upcoming post will be well-argumented exceptions.)

Around three-four weeks ago when the blog was slowly reaching the milestone of 300 Ölbeats, I seriously thought of writing a couple of  "Best of the Pest" posts and throwing in the towel after that. The time to keep up posting to the blog has been limited lately, and running again and constantly around 50 beers behind in the posts seriously bugs me. And there will be less time for the blog in the future, since I've found the interesting and important world of coaching kids to play volleyball.

At the same time with these deep thoughts running through my head, the fellow blogger Harri Metsäjoki from Reittausblogi, asked via Twitter whether I would like to have a taste of a couple of his homebrews, one being this IPA and another being a smoked bock that will be in the blog later. As a serious master of homebrewing Harri surely mastered the timing of his offer. Totally astounded, I pushed the thought of quitting the blog aside - "Let's think about that again at 400..." - and answered: "Hellyeah." Couple of weeks later I had a mysterious package in my shaking hands. Last Saturday, ) September 2017, I took the bottle from the fridge and poured it into the glass...

But before the review let's give the word on the brew to the brewer himself:

Reittausblogi IPA 2017
India Pale Ale, 6,2% abv

This is my first homebrew recipe from back in 2013. This summer I wanted to be a little nostalgic so I brewed another batch with a recipe very similar to the first one, just slightly more hops and I used Citra instead of Centennial, because Centennial was out of stock.

I will not lie a lot if I say this recipe is one of the most brewed homebrews in Finland. I wrote the first easily understandable, but thorough, homebrew instructions in Finnish and they became a huge hit, maybe even being a somekind of spark to the current homebrewing wave that is sweeping over Finland. Along with the instructions came this recipe and a lot of people would start their homebrew careers with it. It is still unbelievable and crazy how popular it became and how popular it still remains.

The beer itself is a classic West Coast Style IPA with balanced hoppiness. Malt base is 100% finnish Sahti Malt from the Viking Malt company. Sahti malt is a barley malt mixture with roughly 90% of Pilsner malt and 10% Dark Ale malts. The exact mixture is a secret that the malt house will not share. Sahti malt is sold in 25 kg bags in local supermarkets and is therefore very cheap and the easiest malt to get hold of. And quite well suited to brewing IPA, at least in my opinion.

Malts: Sahti Malt
Hops: Herkules (GER) for bitterness, Cascade (USA) and Citra (USA) for aroma and dry hopping.
Yeast: Safale US-05 (clean fermenting american ale yeast)

What about the beer?

Colour is hazy dark orange with a two-finger thick white head. Aroma has grapefruit, orange and mango. Taste begins with smooth piny fruity bitterness. Bitter grapefruit juice and sweet caramel malts take over with spicy piny side tones. Towards the end bitter pine and sweet citrus get mixed with the grapefruit, while caramel malt retreat to the background. Aftertaste is smoothly citrus fruity and biting piny bitter.

Great and flawless India Pale Ale. Grapefruit clearly leads the game, pine bites in just the right way, fruity sweetness gets nicely through and malts support the game beautifully. The brewer himself has once told that CCCCC IPA was the original brew's role model - there surely are differences in the taste but both are excellent West Coast IPAs. Truly a homebrew worth the rep. This was a privilege. Huge thanks to Harri and Reittausblogi! We'll continue with the bock later.

Brewer's Choice

According to Harri, this great song from the toughest album of 2017 matches his homebrewing hobby well: old equipment, no automation and digital meters. The only digital instrument used while brewing is the kitchen scale.

Taste starts with super-fruity citrus bitterness. Fresh lemon-orange juice with bitter grapefruity and resinous notes takes over. Towards the end bitter grapefruit and sweet orange get on top. Aftertaste has sweet-sour-bitter citrus and some spicy piny dryness.

Now we have reached the extreme citrus of India Pale Ale. Probably some true and trending Vermont style stuff here. Fruit leads beautifully, pine and bitterness follow in harmony. Damn, this is delicious from opening the bottle to the last sip. Best spent 33 Swedish crowns of my life.

Aftertaste has very dry & bitter pine and warming fruity alcohol.

Strong piny India Pale Ale. Bitter pine goes to the limit just without going over it. Nice orange, grapefruit and alcohol flavours, too. Stands out of the crowd. High quality brew.

Aftertaste has bitter grapefruit, sour lemon and salty-fruity dryness.

Grapefruit-orange-packed India Pale Ale. Completely fruit-dominated brew with very gentle bitterness. Craving a little more. Probably the name will change soon, so I'll get it then. But this tastes good and fresh, anyway.

So, a truly tropical India Pale Ale with heavy Mosaic hopping and Vic Secret to bring more fruits. Despite the strong fruits there's some strong growing bitterness, too. Excellent delicious brew.

Before it can be built, the material has to be broken to pieces. Sometimes human life can be like an ongoing mosaic: something complete shattering always, to be constantly under construction. Sadly, this song was about singer Scott Weiland's personal battle against drugs - a battle that ended to Weiland's death in 2015.

Excellent citrus-dominating India Pale Ale. There's bitterness and sweetness, there's sourness an tartness. And of course, some piny bitter-dryness for the finish. This goes to the top sector of the Finnish IPAs I've had. One of Finland's best breweries has succeeded again!

Colour is hazy golden orange with a finger-thick natural white head. Aroma has grapefruit, lemon and kiwifruit. Taste starts with sharply biting grapefruit. Bitter grapefruit takes over with sour lemon and herbal spice. Towards the end herbal pine rises in the line with grapefruit, some sweeter citrus lingering to the background. Aftertaste has strong grapefruit bitterness and lasting piny dryness.

Pretty tasty and rich India Pale Ale. Bitter grapefruit dominates, lemon, pine and herbs play important side roles. Texture has a malty backbone, but the beer goes down nicely. A Spanish version of CCCCC, perhaps? This works absolutely beautifully.

Colour is dark orange with a large natural white head. Aroma has mild citrus, tropical fruits and caramel. Taste begins with slightly piny citrus. Piny grapefruit bitterness dominates over dry malty flavour. Towards the end sweet orange and spiky menthol flavours make an appearance. Aftertaste has piny dryness and herbal citrus bitterness.

Shortly put a decent India Pale Ale. The fruits of the aroma are out-shadowed by pine. The herbal flavours in the end aren't bad but I prefer stronger citrus in this style. Anyway, a small disappointment from the brewery but an alright brew.

The brew is named after a hop variety used in brewing, and the hop Azacca is named after the loa i.e. the spirit of agriculture in Haitian voodoo. Some sources claim he's the spirit of thunder but all the same - it's still about the ancient Caribbean belief.

Excellent super-drinkable fruity India Pale Ale. Fresh citrus lead by grapefruit and strong pine all the way. Simple but solid. Right kind of first impression by Magic Rock.

Bring your own booze, bring your own bombs... What's the difference? Huge, of course, when you think about it. But nevertheless, despite the critical message of the song, I matched it with this beer explosive. Call it playing with a serious matter if you like.

Deliciously hopped India Pale Ale. Fruits and bitterness come on powerfully but smoothly. Every sip seems to strengthen the leading flavours. I prefer the bottled version against the tap (Cafe Rooster visit). Clearly one of the top IPAs from Finland now.

So, the name of the brew is a word game with 'humala' (Finnish for hop) and 'Himalaja' (Himalayas). Since it's clearly an American style brew, some good blues rock seemed appropriate. Then Mr. Bonamassa offers a song that describes how it is to have a microbrewery in Finland, I presume. If it's not climbing and "pounding the hammer between steel and stone" every day, it's surely not a bed of roses either.

Excellent citrus-packed English IPA. Aroma promises fruits and taste delivers. Lemon, grapefruit and touch of orange come through. Really fresh experience.

Pure and straight India Pale Ale. Simple grapefruit and pine flavours, fine balance between bitter and dry. No unnecessary fancy tricks. Sometimes it's nice to be sure about what you'll get - this is the brew.

Legendary India Pale Ale. Rich, fresh, bitter and especially fruity. No overtones, just pure and smooth enjoyment. Incredible brew.

Once again it's time for a rock ballad to the West Coast state. The song is actually about the dark side of the American culture industry, to which the Californian breweries don't belong in my opinion. Still the mood, especially the guitar playing of John Frusciante, matches with the great IPA.

Dry sour-bitter lemon-grapefruit juice takes over. Towards the end bitter malts and hayish dryness come through. Aftertaste has malty dry bitterness and lemon sourness.

Really strong-flavoured citrus-filled India Pale Ale with steady and solid malt base, especially considering the abv. Sourness on top, bitter and malty flavours follow. Despite the intense sour-bitterness this goes down the throat pretty easy.

Since the brew's name is taken from a city in India where the owners of Thornbridge Hall were married, we'll let it show in the selected song. Of course, the IPA style cries for rock, so this time it's raga rock.

Freshly bitter and piny grapefruit takes over with sweet orange in the background. Towards the end strong pine and citrus peel flavours come in front. Aftertaste has peel bitterness and piny dryness.

Fruity, fresh and delicious India Pale Ale. Grapefruit and pine dominate the flavour strongly but smoothly. Sweet orange and bitter peel give some extra fruit and twist. Excellent brew from Buxton, once again.

As a superfresh IPA, the beer demands a rock song. The name demands a war-related song... Well, since we're in Finland, someone could consider a song where the drunk head-of-the-family takes his axe and drives the rest of the family outside to the cold snow. ("Perr-kele!!") But since those songs are only made in Finland and for certain Finnish beers, we'll stick to the war theme. Even though there are only muskets and horses - no axes - mentioned in the song lyrics. Damn the details, just listen to Bruce and the boys!

Funk, right? Metal, ok? That's funk metal. We'll pick some RATM here. Hate it or just dislike it, but there's something uniquely striking in Zach de la Rocha's vocal and rap style. The funk takes the Belgique part of the brew, by the way.

Excellent. Delicious. Super fruity India Pale Ale. Bitter grapefruit and sweet orange with nicely growing pine. No wonder that this brew is considered as one of the West Coast IPA landmarks.

What about the beer?

Colour is fuzzy golden orange with a small white head. Aroma has grapefruit, lemon and yeasty funk. Taste starts with yeasty fruity bitter sourness. Fresh softly sour lemon takes over with a funky hayish countryside flavour. Towards the end citrus turns to gently bitter and tart grapefruit with some pine. Aftertaste has bitter-sour grapefruit with dry pine.

Bruxellensis Truis clearly brings the sour-tartness here. It cuts the bitter edge smoothly, enhances the citrus flavours and adds some funky yeast to the picture. Wild and tasty.

This one offered a bunch of options from Maroon 5 through Def Leppard and KISS to Blackie Lawless fucking like a beast. Boring. Wanted something actually untamed and aggressive. Well, we're close with this.
